At the end of the 19th century, granite quarrying began on Bornholm. The Danish industrial prince, C.F. Tietgen, sold the area by Hotel Hammersø to the German Baron von Martens, who invested heavily in the area - and soon the granite quarries became workplaces for over a thousand people. Some of the German directors took their family and friends to Sandvig...and that was the starting point for the tourism to Bornholm. Because the wealthy Germans - and soon also Danes - fell in love with the picturesque combination of chalk-white sand and towering rocks. Ever since then, Sandvig has been one of the most sought-after resorts on Bornholm - but still with plenty of space, as large parts of the beautiful natural areas are now protected. For example, try the hike around the rock formation Hammerknuden, which has been voted Denmark's most beautiful hike. Look forward to fantastic views beyond the sea and the old granite quarries.

Medieval adventure awaits you

Hotel Hammersø is located in Sandvig, which is a small cozy town with restaurants and cafes. Just outside Sandvig lies Northern Europe's largest castle "Hammershus", which was an impregnable fortress in the Middle Ages. Here you will experience a medieval adventure. Did you know, for example, that already in the Middle Ages there was public user payment? Bornholm's executioner lived at Hammershus...and of course you paid yourself if you had to have your head chopped off...and there was always advance payment. Also hear the story of when the king's daughter Leonora Christine escaped from her dungeon on a cold winter night in 1660.

Krølle Bølle and the UFO's

Sandvig is also home to Bornholm's legendary figure, the troll Krølle Bølle. Whether it is Krølle Bølle who is at stake or not cannot be said, but in the book "Mysterious Denmark" there are many accounts of mysterious luminous objects which move at high speed across the sky near Sandvig. For example, a German tourist has seen a saucer-shaped craft fly out through a large opening in the rocks. Shortly after, several yachtsmen reported seeing a similar vessel fly up from the sea at Hammershus and continue vertically into the sky until they lost sight of it. A little less mysterious - but perhaps more serious - was that during the Cold War several times lost equipment from the Russian special forces Spetsnaz was found at Hammerknuden by Hotel Hammersø. Rumor had it that the area was used as a secret training ground, when the Russian special forces had to prove that they could operate unseen in enemy territory.

Take a boat trip from Hammerhavnen

You get slightly more down-to-earth experiences at the harbor, Hammerhavnen, where small boats take you on a trip down the coast. Seen from the water side, the rocky coast becomes even more dramatic than from the land side. As you pass below Hammershus, you will be able to vividly imagine that the castle was an impregnable fortress in the turbulent Denmark of the Middle Ages. The experiences are spiced up by stories from your boat driver - and that certainly does not make the experiences any less exciting.

Hotel Hammersø in Sandvig - History

Since 1906, a hotel has been run on the site where Hotel Hammersø is located today. Allinge-Sandvig was thus the first destination when Bornholm was discovered as a holiday resort at the beginning of the 20th century. The picturesque combination of towering rocks and chalk-white sand in small sand lagoons acted as a magnet for the Danish and German citizens - for example the German Emperor Wilhelm, who in June 1914 was on his way to Bornholm. As is well known, however, riots broke out between the European countries in June 1914, and Kaiser Wilhelm chose to cut short his holiday to begin preparations for World War I instead. It was a decision that stands in stark contrast to spending a holiday in the idyllic, peaceful and beautiful nature at Allinge-Sandvig. The world would have been very different today if Emperor William had prioritized his vacation instead of increasing the tensions that triggered World War I.

Emperor Wilhelm

The history books do not say anything about whether Emperor Wilhelm should have stayed at Hotel Hammersø, but it is certain that World War II also had a great impact on Hotel Hammersø. In 1942 the young musician Magnus Kjær took over the hotel. Magnus Kjær had worked hard to raise the money for the purchase. During the day, Magnus worked as a hairdresser, while in the evening he played music and entertained at the hotels in the Sandvig area. However, after taking over the hotel, Magnus Kjær and his wife Karen concentrated exclusively on hotel management, and despite the difficult conditions during World War II, things went well.

German troops

During 1944, however, German troops seized Hotel Hammersø and the hotel was used as a field hospital for wounded German soldiers from the Eastern Front. It was a hard time for the otherwise beautiful hotel buildings, which were badly run down. In May 1945, Denmark was liberated. However, the liberation did not include Bornholm, which was instead occupied by Russian troops.

The Russians are coming

The Russian troops immediately seized the best-located hotels on Bornholm - including Hotel Hammersø. In the period up to 1946, when the Russian troops gave Bornholm back to Denmark, Hotel Hammersø was therefore the command center for Russian officers. In the area around Hotel Hammersø and Sandvig you can still find traces of Russian trenches. To begin with, the Russians thus had no intention of leaving Bornholm and prepared that they would retain Bornholm by force if the Russians' otherwise allies, the English and the Americans, were to demand Bornholm back to Denmark.

Marshall-help

When Magnus Kjær got his hotel back at the end of 1946, the hotel was in a sorry state. But with Marshall aid from the USA and a huge effort from Karen and Magnus Kjær, the hotel was restored to great condition. The renovation has continued continuously since then, and today it is Ninette Kjær, granddaughter of Karen and Magnus Kjær, who run Hotel Hammersø.
